Staging and Prognostication Systems in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

چکیده

Liver cancer is the second most common cause of mortality among all cancers in the world. A holistic prognostic classification in hepatocellular carcinoma has not been unified yet. Many prognostic scoring systems have been made from different centres, some of which have been validated in large series. Even then, universally acceptable scoring systems are still an unmet need in this disease because the prognostic indices are variable with different groups from different regions who were under study. In this review, a comprehensive detailing of common prognostic scoring systems in hepatocellular carcinoma is dealt with, underlining their strengths and weaknesses.

Molecular Prognosis in Liver Disease

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide, with over 500,000 cases diagnosed each year[1]. The clinical behavior of HCC is heterogeneous and difficult to predict, depending in part on the severity of the background chronic liver disease in which most of these tumors arise[2, 3]. Most patients present with unresectable disease; for those who undergo rese...

International validation of the Chinese University Prognostic Index for staging of hepatocellular carcinoma: a joint United Kingdom and Hong Kong study

The outcome of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients significantly differs between western and eastern population centers. Our group previously developed and validated the Chinese University Prognostic Index (CUPI) for the prognostication of HCC among the Asian HCC patient population. In the current study, we aimed to validate the CUPI using an international cohort of patients with HCC and to...

Validation of different staging systems for hepatocellular carcinoma in a cohort of 249 patients undergoing radiotherapy

There is no consensus on predicting prognosis for hepatocellular carcinoma patients undergoing radiotherapy. This study aims to evaluate the validity of different staging systems. Overall, 249 hepatocellular carcinoma patients were evaluated retrospectively. All patients were classified by different staging systems. The cumulative survival rates were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method, an...

Renal Cell Carcinoma: Prognostic Factors and Patient Selection

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) accounts for 2% of all new cancer cases worldwide. Staging systems for RCC are a valuable tool for guiding patient selection for the various treatment regimens and clinical trials. Integration of pathologic tumour stage with histologic and clinical features has led to the development of a number of comprehensive prognostication systems to predict patient outcomes. Mor...

Issues pertaining to PET imaging of liver cancer

Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging using 2-deoxy-2-[F-18]fluoro-D-glucose (FDG) has proven valuable in the diagnosis, staging and restaging for many cancers. However, its application for liver cancer has remained limited owing in part to the relatively high background uptake of the tracer in the liver plus the significant variability of the tumor specific uptake in liver cancer among pa...
